What is the Texas EBT?

The Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) is responsible for administering the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) Card to eligible benefit recipients.

The Texas EBT Card, also called the TX Lone Star card is used for food stamps (SNAP) and cash benefits (TANF) cash benefits.

If you are approved for food or cash assistance in Texas, your benefits will be deposited electronically onto your TX EBT Card each month.

Benefits can be redeemed directly from your Texas EBT Card at an eligible store or online.

The TX EBT Card can be used just like a normal plastic, debit card.

When you receive your card, you will be provided with instructions on how to activate your card and register your 4-digit PIN.

There are four ways you can check your Texas EBT balance – online, in-person, by phone and at an ATM.

Follow the instructions below on the four ways you can complete the Texas EBT balance check for your Lone Star Card benefits.

Option #1 – Check your Last Receipt

The quickest and easiest way to get your Texas Lone Star Card balance is with your most recent receipt.

Once you locate your last receipt, your current remaining Texas EBT balance will be listed at the bottom. of your grocery store receipt or the ATM receipt if you also get cash benefits.

You should get in the habit of keeping your most current EBT receipt, that way, you always have a quick way to check your Texas EBT balance before you shop.

Option #2 – Call Texas EBT Customer Service

The second way you can check your Texas EBT Card balance is by phone.

Call the TX Lone Star EBT Customer Service Number at 1-800-777-7328.

The Texas EBT Customer Service phone number is also listed on the back of your Lone Star Card.

The Customer Service Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

After you call, enter your 16-digit EBT card number and PIN. Once complete, you will receive your current TX SNAP or cash benefits balance.

Option #3 – Visit an ATM or POS machine

The third option to check your Texas EBT balance is at an ATM or POS machine.

First, you can check your cash account balance at an ATM.

In addition, you can check your Texas Lone Star balance at a POS machine (cashier) at any store before making a purchase.

Step 1 – Visit the Your Texas Benefits Website

The first step to completing the Texas EBT login is to visit the Your Texas Benefits website.

You can visit the website at www.yourtexasbenefits.com.

Step 2 – Manage your Benefits

Once on the website, locate the “Manage” button at the top-right of the page and click it.

After that, find and click the “Log In Now” button.

Next, a login section will pop-up on your page. Now enter Your Texas Benefits Username and Password.

When are food stamps deposited in Texas?

Texas food stamp benefits are deposited on the TX Lone Star Card based on the last digit of your EDG Number.

What can I buy with a Texas EBT?

Your Texas EBT Card can be used to purchase any eligible food items that can be consumed or prepared at home.

Here is the list of eligible items you can buy with your Texas EBT Card:

  • Baby Food (for example, infant formula, cereals, juices)
  • Baker’s yeast
  • Bottled water
  • Baked Goods
  • Breads and Cereals
  • Cakes that are more than 50% edible

  • Deli food (for example, cold sandwiches, subs, sushi, salads)
  • Energy Drinks with a Nutrition Label

  •  Gift baskets (if the value of food item is at least 50% of the total price)

What does Texas EBT not cover?

Your Texas EBT Card can not be used to purchase any hot or prepared food item, as well as any non-food items.

Here is a list of items that your EBT does not cover:

  • Beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, or tobacco
  • Soaps, paper products, cosmetics, grooming items
  • Pet food (for example, dog food, cat food, etc.)
  • Vitamins or medicines
  • Food that will be eaten in the store
  • Hot foods

Other Items you cannot buy with your EBT Card include:

  • Cod liver oil
  • Cough drops
  • Crabs (cooked and hot)

Can I use Texas EBT to Buy Groceries Online?

Great News for Texas SNAP EBT Recipients!! You can now shop for groceries online with your SNAP EBT.

Currently, you can shop online with your Texas EBT Card at the following retailers:

  • Albertsons
  • ALDI
  • Amazon
  • Brookshire’s Food and Pharmacy
  • FRESH by Brookshire’s
  • H-E-B
  • Joe V’s Smart Shop
  • Sam’s Club Scan and Go
  • Spring Market
  • Sprouts Farmers Market
  • Super 1 Foods
  • Walmart

As noted above, you can also use your EBT card for online grocery purchases at ALDI via Instacart.

Using the Instacart app, you can now shop and select from ALDI’s EBT SNAP-eligible products.

Once items are added to your cart, you will be able to select how much of your EBT benefits you would like to allocate to the order.

How do I dispute an authorized charge on my Texas EBT Card account?

If your Texas EBT Card has been charged for something that you did not authorize or purchase, an adjustment may be completed to reclaim your funds and settle the transaction.

You have 90 days from the date of the transaction to dispute a transaction on your Texas EBT Card account.

Does food stamps roll over in Texas?

Yes, if you do not use all your Texas food stamps in one month you will not lose them. Your food stamps will roll over and stay in your Texas EBT Card for one year from the date they were added to your account. That means next time benefits are put into your account, they are added to what is still in there.
